Let's Talk
Modern grey designer bathroom — Windows and Doors in Ballina, NSW
  • What’s the best way to clean my shower screen?

There’s good news and bad news. If you clean your shower screen regularly, you’ll avoid needing to perform a deep clean. This is the good news. Regular cleans, once a day, need only water and a squeegee. A microfibre cloth is also recommended. Leaving the shower screen door ajar is a good idea because it allows the air to move freely so things dry more readily.

Apart from commonly available cleaning solutions, you would mix up your own, using ½-cup rubbing alcohol, ½-cup hydrogen peroxide, 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid, 1 tablespoon dishwasher rinse-aid. Add these ingredients to a one-litre spray bottle and top up with water. Cap the bottle, rock it back and forth to avoid foaming the solution, and store away from direct sunlight.

The bad news… If you are not in the habit of regular cleaning, soap scum will build up and the only thing standing between you and the glass being etched into a cloudy-looking second-rate version of itself is the dreaded deep clean.

A product, known as the Magic Eraser, is legendary for cleaning shower screen glass. Look for this product in K-mart and on Kogan. Look in supermarkets for Chux Glass & Tile Magic Eraser.

Another powerful cleanser is half a cup of bicarbonate of soda mixed with enough water to form a thick paste. Take a non-abrasive sponge and scrub the glass with this paste. Stay clear of the aluminium—the bicarb would eat into the oxide layer that protects the aluminium.

Metal parts should be cleaned with a white vinegar and water solution. Once you have your shower glass sparkling clean again, Rain-X (available in auto shops, such as Supercheap Auto and Repco) has enough repellent goodness to possibly even send your squeegee to an early retirement.

Another good tip is to avoid soap bars—they contain talc, which causes the build-up. Liquid soap and natural soaps are talc-free.

  • What are my Shower Screen Door options?

You can choose between sliding doors, swinging doors, and pivot doors. A swing door opens outwards. Pivot doors can open in either direction.

  • How thick is the glass in Shower Screen Doors?

The minimum thickness of shower screen door glass is 6mm. Frameless screens require thicker glass—10mm, usually.
